Bold color, clever tech, and a little vintage charm – The Novogratz talk about their first-ever lighting collaboration, family life, and designing spaces that shine inside and out.
When Pooky Lighting set out to bring color and creativity to the outdoor lighting world, we knew just who to call. The Novogratz — Cortney and Robert, the American design duo known for their bold use of color, eclectic style, and joyful approach to interiors — were the perfect partners for a playful new collection, which includes rechargeable lanterns, pendant lights, table and floor lamps, as well as outdoor mirrors and wired wall sconces.
The Pooky team were thrilled to work with them and bring their signature energy to this first-of-its-kind lighting collaboration. We caught up with the couple to chat about the design process, their inspirations, and how to make your garden glow…

What excited you most about teaming up with Pooky for this collaboration?
Cortney: We’ve always felt that outdoor lighting should be just as special and beautiful as what you have inside. When we saw what Pooky was doing, we knew they were the perfect partners to help make that vision a reality. Their cordless tech and bold style made it easy to say yes.
This is Pooky’s first outdoor collection and your first lighting collab — what did you each bring to the table creatively?
Robert: We brought our love of bold color, playful design, and creating spaces that feel warm and inviting. Pooky brought their incredible craftsmanship and innovative tech. Together, we pushed the boundaries of what outdoor lighting can be.
How would you describe your design style in three words?
Cortney: Colorful, eclectic, and full of soul. We love mixing old and new, high and low, and always want our spaces to feel lived-in and full of personality.

Where do you draw your inspiration from — especially for color and pattern?
Cortney: We draw inspiration from everywhere. Travel, vintage markets, street art, architecture, and the people we meet all spark ideas. Our seven kids each have different interests and styles, which keeps us constantly inspired and open to new ways of thinking. Color and pattern are all around if you're paying attention.
As a family of nine, does having a big, creative household influence how you think about design?
Cortney: Absolutely. Raising seven kids taught us to design spaces that are both functional and full of personality. Even though not all of them live at home now, their creativity and energy still influence everything we do. Our spaces are meant to feel lived-in, welcoming, and inspiring.

Color is a huge part of your style — how did you choose the palette for this range?
Robert: Color has always been central to our design approach. For this range, we wanted shades that felt timeless but still playful. The vintage blush pink was a favorite. It has a nostalgic charm that works beautifully outdoors and adds warmth without feeling too sweet.
The collection combines practical tech and playful design. How important was that balance of function and personality?
Cortney: That balance was everything. We believe great design should make your life easier and more beautiful. The tech makes these lights super functional, but the color, shape, and feel bring the personality. You need both to create spaces that truly shine.

Which piece do you personally love the most — and how would you style it at home?
Cortney: We love the lanterns. They’re so versatile. We’d use them to light up a garden pathway or place one in the center of an outdoor dining table for a cozy, inviting vibe. It adds just the right amount of charm and glow.
Finally, what’s next for The Novogratz? Any hints of what we might see later this year?
Cortney: We’re taking on more design projects, always on the lookout for our next home to renovate and make our own. We're also expanding our product lines and working on some exciting launches we can't wait to share. There’s a lot of color, creativity, and heart coming your way.
